The Green Police is the popular name for Vietnam’s Environmental Police Department. This special police department was initiated as the rising awareness and concern on natural damage and environmental degradation due to vast industrialization. It is widely known that since Vietnam opened its door for foreign capitals, Vietnam turns in to one of the most interesting investment destination in Asia.

With rich natural resources and low wages labors, no wonder many industries relocated their factories to Vietnam. It is not only creating pollution but also vast exploitation on wildlife. The Green Police has the jurisdiction to enforce the law of environmental protections. Their jurisdiction allows them to supervise, investigate, and uncover any activity that potential to risks the environmental sustainability. Since it was initiated, the Vietnam’s Environmental Police Department has uncovered numbers of violations on environmental protection. It ranges from pollution, toxic discharge, wildlife trafficking, illegal lodging, and many more.

However, it doesn’t mean that the Green Police doesn’t have any difficulty on their jurisdiction. There are many overlapping with other government agencies such as food hygiene and safety. Many crimes against environmental law have been uncovered by the Green Police. But only few of them really charged as criminal violations on the court trial. There are lots of administrative issues and coordination barriers between the law enforcement agencies and just like other developing countries, the law could be compromised since there are high corruption rates. Vietnam’s Environmental Police Department has a tough duty ensuring environmental sustainability. However, they need a breakthrough in legal regulations to ensure that they could give a maximum contribution. The government also needs to promote environmental awareness among people. It is something that rarely found in people that most of them still live in poverty. The Green Police needs all people take part in environmental protection and as the forefront, Vietnam’s Environmental Police Department never give up to make sure that environmental sustainability is dedicated for welfare of all Vietnam people.
